Information Modeling

Information Modeling is the practice of capturing information such as data records, status and notifications, in a consistent standards based format. This is important so that organizations may share data between their business applications and allow for more simpler and cost effective integration between software systems.

It is paramount that an organization analyze and determine a set of standards and a common framework to use for information modeling. All departments or groups that are practicing common modeling approaches must adhere to and diligently follow these standards and framework. A very good framework available is that offered by the Burton Group and it's Data Management practice area. Please go here to learn more.

One of my favorite illustrations that comes from the Burton Group's Joe Maguire is the model shown below which lays out in very simple form, the areas of care that organizations mus manage in any Information Modeling effort.
